purpose
HOSA is an organization put together for students who are pursuing a career in the medical field or those who want to see what it entails. There are competitions held at regional, state, and national levels. The student will pick a skill to compete in and specialize in that. It ranges from middle school students to high school seniors and being a part of HOSA comes with many great opportunities. The juniors had three HOSA representatives which I am proud to say that I was one of them. It has given us all the chance to give back to our community and we have all learned so much!
Practice
On every Thursday from 3-5 pm, we all met to practice our skills. Each student specialized in their own skill and practice helped us get feedback and learn more. The skill that I chose was Medical Spelling so every practice I brought my materials and quizzed myself like I was at a spelling bee. Whenever the other students needed a hand we would be there to help and give tips for improvement.
Competition
HOSA competition was a great experience for everyone involved. It gave us all the opportunity to learn more about healthcare and show what we have learned through our practice. A lot of skills began with a test first to place you in your skill and then you would go present what you have been practicing for. In my case, I took a test about medical spelling and terminology. Whatever score I received placed me in a certain spot at the spelling bee. After that each of the competitors would be given a word to spell and if they spelled it wrong, the next competitor would spell it. The last person standing was the winner. I placed fourth Medical Spelling at regionals and I was so proud of myself.

Giving Back
Being a part of HOSA definitely has perks. We have had the chance to participate in all types of activities and give back to our community. One of my favorite activities was the LACADA event. Everyone in HOSA went to help the children and mothers in LACADA make gingerbread houses for Christmas. It was so fulfilling to see everyone with smiles on their faces and it was amazing to know that we helped do that.
